Quake rattled Earth orbit, changed map of Asia: US geophysicist

Yeah, but perspective here... The orbit slowed 3 micro-seconds. That's 3 millionth's of a second. That's barely recordable by computers!

The islands moved a lot, but only 66 feet or so. This isn't a major realignment of the map. Heck, GPS, unaided by a ground based signal, will only get you better accuracy than that. Granted on a good day it will get you to within a few feet, but really. This isn't like the New Madrid earthquake of the early 1800s that moved the Mississippi. That was a big deal.

The tsunami is the real story here.
